Hello All!

I do have another question.  I understand the PS3IR-PRO is powered by the USB port.  Will the USB port from the PS3 until work when the PS3 is turned-off?  I saw a thread that seemed that someone had problems with this, but I think his question just was not clear.  Simply put, can I just plug the device into a PS3 USB port for power (including power toggle) when the PS3 is turned-off?

I would appreciate anyone's help for someone who is new to both this device and the PS3.  Thanks!

Jim

No, for some odd reason, Sony has made it so the USB ports are only powered while the unit is on and running, green LED. When the unit is off, red LED, no power comes from the USB ports so nothing works. Most people are using cable boxes, AC to USB adapters, self powered USB hubs, etc. You will not be able to turn on the PS3 if you are trying to draw power from it.

Thanks for the help.  I know my TiVo HD has at least one free USB. Any ideas on whether that would work (and not make the TiVo HD unit go crazy) having the PS3IR-PRO plugged into it (and not knowing what it is)?

Thanks again!

Had another idea.  What about the USB on the back of Wii?  I've got one of those right there, too, with the USB unused.  Is that powered when it is in stand-by mode (using WiiConnect) with an orange light?

I found an adapter for a Motorola RAZR to mini-USB at MyCableMart for $4.40.  Here's the link: http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=711.  Would this work okay?

Thanks again!

Powering via the Wii (with WiiConnect24 turned on) absolutely works.  I've been doing that for a week now.

My fallback would have been the TiVo Series 3.  The USB ports there are always powered (since the unit is always on for recording); otherwise the wireless adapter wouldn't function. Smiley

I use a Motorola USB power cable for one of their BluTooth headsets and it works great.

I had an extra self powered USB hub and it works great. The PS3 also recognizes it so I have extra ports when needed when it is on.

I have a USB port on the back of my Samsung HDTV that is powered when the TV is off. Works great. Just another option...

Just got my pro - but I'm not getting power.

I used my harmony remote's mini-b cable, from a powered usb, but got no response.

Is it possible that this cable doesn't carry power?

I've noticed that there are 4 pin and 5 pin cables - the Harmony one is a 4 pin - is this because it is missing a power feed?

Any help greatly appreciated!!

I may be able to confirm your solution.  I just tried hooking up my PRO with three different USB cables with no luck.  It was only after reading your note and using a magnifying glass to look inside the connectors that I realized all three were the 4-pin variety.  I plan to stop at a store in the next few days and pick up a 5-pin cable and will report back.

Well, it looks like I: a) jumped the gun on the 4-pin vs. 5-pin cable issue, and b) still have a non-syncing PS3IR-PRO.  My brand new 5-pin cable arrived today from monoprice.  I hooked it up, but the PS3IR-PRO wouldn't sync up, so I looked in BOTH ends of the cable with a magnifying glass.  That's when I realized the USB cables I'd used earlier had 4 pins in the large end (hence my conclusion that I using the wrong cable), but 5 pins in the mini end, which means I probably had good working cables all along.  I've asked Mike if there's any tests he'd like me to try.

Before the new v1.1 firmware, how did you sync the units?

Nevermind, found the older instructions (e.g., press zero, then press and hold the down arrow), but that didn't work either.

 Sad

I was doind so on the game controller and not getting results till I did so on my Harmony remote and it sync'd.
I am using a usb cell cgarger to power the Pro and it works well.

Thanks georgev, IT WORKED!!!  I had been using the remote with no luck.  One try with the Harmony remote and it sync'd!  Duh (insert sound of slapping forward here)!...only an IR device would cause the PS3IR-PRO to send a BT signal.

Press the number zero on your remote and then press and hold only the down arrow. The remote must be in the correct mode to be sending the PS2 IR commands.
