Its way back now, but when I bought the PS3IR-PRO the enclosed paperwork stated a new case would be produced where the IR receive wouldn't be recessed as much - giving a wider signal field....

Did this ever happen?

Yes, it did.  We have a new front panel that is infra-red transparent.  Please send a message to support@schmartz.com regarding the need for a new front panel.  We'll ship it for free if you are located in the United States.
