Any updates on PS3IR+PWR status or workarounds?
« on: January 04, 2009, 06:04:27 PM »
Howdy Mike (or others),
Was wondering if there were any updates on the status of the functioning of "Power On" with this unit?  Or is it still the same where the current PS3 firmware disables power to the USB ports regardless of PSP Remote Start being enabled, thus "Power On" from the PS3IR+PWR can't function?

Any current workarounds that are known to work?  e.g. plugging the PS3IR+PWR into an AC powered USB hub which then plugs into the PS/3? (so that the PS3IR+PWR unit gets power)

At this point, other than Power On, everything else (incl Power Off) appears to still work properly.  My system was rack mounted & URC remote programmed by the AV installer, so I want to limit any tweaks I personally make to the system since most things in the stack seem to work for the most part right now after a couple iterations by the installer!!

Thanks for the help!

As far as I know the USB power is still turned off when the PS3 is off.  That means it can't power the unit on.  If I remember right Mike talked to Sony when this first happened and the person he talked to said they didn't realize that it had been turned off, and they were supposedly going to look into it.  I don't think anything ever came out of it though (kind of like how Mike tried to get his USB id numebr added to Sony's official list so the PS button would work, and Sony talked to him at first and then ignored him).

So I wouldn't plan on it getting fixed anytime soon.

Sorry.

Mike if you have any more to add feel free, as I am interested if you ever heard back from them on either issue.
For help setting up your Harmony remote feel free to send me a PM.

Include your model of remote, inputs settings for your TV, AV Receiver, etc., and any other setup requests.  I will also need your Harmony Login name and password (I recommend changing your password temporarily to 12345).

Thanks Beerstalker.

Any confirmed workarounds, like using an AC-powered USB hub?

Thanks

I believe I remember Mike saying that USB hubs are supposed to shut off power if the upstream device shuts off power to the USB port the hub is plugged into.  Since the PS3 shuts off it's USB port, the powered USB hub should shut off it's ports too.  However, I think Mike said that some USB hubs ignore this rule and they theoretically should work.

I could be totally wrong in the way I am remembering this though.
